James has established a reputation as one of the Islands’ leading litigation lawyers and most successful advocates, with international recognition. He specializes in advising high net-worth individuals and international institutions in relation to complex, multi-jurisdictional disputes and transactions. His areas of practice include cross-border asset tracing and recovery, the enforcement in the Cayman Islands of foreign judgments and arbitral awards, professional negligence and other tort actions (including personal injury), trust law, employment disputes and company law matters (including minority shareholders’ actions and claims by and against directors).

Since coming to the Cayman Islands in 1997, he has appeared in many of the highest-profile civil and commercial cases, including the CVC/Opportunity litigation at the Grand Court, Court of Appeal and Privy Council levels.

He attended university in Canada (Trinity College at the University of Toronto), the United States (The Wharton Business School, BSc. Economics, University of Pennsylvania, B.A. Political Science), England (St. John’s College, Cambridge University, B.A. (Hons), M.A.) and Brussels, Strasbourg and Luxembourg (University of Leicester, LLM European Law).

James was called to the Bar of England and Wales in November 1987 and joined the Chambers of Alan Levy, Q.C. in London, where he conducted a civil, commercial and company practice, appearing regularly in the Queen’s Bench and Chancery Divisions of the High Court and the Court of Appeal.

He joined the litigation department of Ian Boxall & Co. (later Boxalls) in March 1997. He became a partner of and head of litigation in April 2002 and a partner of Ogier following the merger of Boxalls and Ogier in February 2003. In July 2006, James left Ogier to establish Bodden & Bodden Litigation, which subsequently became Chapmans.
